What we keep, and for how long
The story is the part that lasts. Your transcript, smart notes, analysis, exports, and the audio of their voice stay in your account for as long as your plan says, and on the Family Project pass that means forever.
Video from a Studio interview works differently. It is a large working file, so we keep it for 180 days: long enough to review it, share it, and download the copy you want to keep. Every recording shows how long it has left from the day you make it. Downloading is free, and there is no limit on how often you do it.

Frequently asked questions
$69 CAD, one-time. You get 20 hours of recording to use across 12 months, unlimited analysis and smart notes, a virtual scheduler, and keepsake exports you keep forever (even after the 12 months end). It's designed for people capturing a grandparent's or elder's stories, not for professional podcast or documentary work.
You keep everything you captured. Transcripts, audio, analysis, and exports stay in your account forever, and there is no auto-charge. To start new recordings, renew the pass ($69 CAD) or subscribe to a monthly plan. The one thing with a clock on it is video from a Studio interview, which we keep for 180 days from the day it is recorded.
No. The pass is specifically for Oral History interviews, and the interview-type selector only shows that option while the pass is active. For professional work (podcasts, documentaries, testimonials, demos), see our monthly Starter / Pro / Studio plans. They include all six interview types and the pro /50 scoring rubric.
20 hours over the 12-month window. That's 20 one-hour interviews, plenty for a family project. If you need more, you can add a top-up bundle any time: 5h / 10h / 20h, purchased from your account page. Top-up hours expand your cap but don't extend the 12-month window.
Recording time is only tracked while you're actively recording an interview. Browsing the app, editing notes, reviewing transcripts, and setting up story context don't count toward your usage.
Yes. You can pause and resume recording during an interview. Only active recording time counts toward your monthly hours.
You'll receive a warning as you approach your limit. If you reach it mid-interview, your current session will continue, but you won't be able to start new recordings until your usage resets, you upgrade your plan, or (on the Family Project pass) you add a top-up bundle.
A video call we host ourselves, built into the interview screen. You send your guest a link, they join from their browser, and their face sits beside your live transcript, your coaching suggestions, and your notes. It replaces the second app most people run alongside StorySeeker. The Studio room is unlimited on the Studio plan and the Family Project pass, and Pro includes 3 hours a month.
No. They open the link you send, allow their camera and microphone, and knock. You let them in. It works in a phone or tablet browser, so someone can join from a kitchen table without signing up for anything or installing anything.
180 days. Video files are large, and keeping every one of them forever is the thing that would force prices up. So we keep the story forever and the video for six months. Your transcript, notes, analysis, exports, and the audio of their voice are not affected and stay in your account. Every recording shows how long it has left from the day you make it, and downloading it is free.
Not yet. Hosting needs a computer, because the room sits beside your transcript, coaching panel, and notes, and those do not fit on a phone screen together. Your guest can join from any device. One thing to know: a guest on an iPhone or iPad is recorded in the transcript but does not get their own video file, because Safari stops the recording when the tab goes to the background. A guest on a computer does.
Progress reports use AI to analyze trends across multiple interviews. Free trial users get 1 report total. Starter users get 2 per billing cycle, Pro users get 10, and Studio users get unlimited. Your count resets each billing period.
Prep briefs are AI-generated research summaries you can create before an interview to help you prepare smarter questions. Project reports analyze trends and themes across all interviews within a project. Pro users get 5 prep briefs and 3 project reports per month. Studio users get unlimited of both.
All plans include automatic model failover. If the primary AI provider experiences issues, your requests automatically switch to the secondary provider, so your coaching and analysis never go down during an interview.
You keep access to your current plan through the end of your billing period. After that, features exclusive to your old plan (like the scheduler, prep briefs, or project reports) will be locked, but all your data (interviews, notes, transcripts, and reports) stays intact.
Yes, if you keep "Save audio recording" on in Story Setup (it's on by default). You can play back, download, or delete recordings from the interview page at any time. Free trial recordings are kept for 30 days; the Family Project pass keeps them forever (even after the 12-month access window ends); Starter, Pro, and Studio plans keep them as long as your subscription is active. Virtual call audio (Zoom, Meet, Teams) is also saved automatically on Pro and Studio.
Recordings are captured directly in your browser at archival quality (roughly 96 kbps mono). That's great for reviewing, searching, and sharing personal copies with interviewees or family. For broadcast-grade output like a podcast release or documentary master, we recommend running a dedicated recorder (Zoom H1, Rode, etc.) alongside StorySeeker.
No, and this is worth explaining properly, because the concern is a fair one. When you type into a free consumer app like ChatGPT, what you write can be used to improve that company's models. That is a real thing and people are right to have heard about it. StorySeeker does not work that way. We connect through the business APIs, where both OpenAI and Anthropic commit contractually that customer content is never used for training. Your grandmother's story is not teaching anybody's model anything.
Your recording and transcript are stored with Cloudflare, on servers in eastern North America. To turn speech into text, a copy of the audio goes to OpenAI. To write the notes, the coaching suggestions, and the analysis, the transcript goes to Anthropic, or to OpenAI if you have chosen that provider. Both are in the United States. If you use the Studio room, LiveKit carries the video during the call, but the file is written straight into our storage, so they never hold a copy. If you send our assistant into a Zoom, Meet or Teams call, that recording is made by Recall on servers in Oregon. That is the complete list. Nobody else touches it.
OpenAI and Anthropic each hold a copy for up to 30 days and then delete it. They keep it that long only to check for abuse of their own systems, and no one there sits and listens to your interview. Recall, which is only involved if you use the meeting assistant, keeps its copy for 7 days, which is long enough for us to pull the recording into your account. Your own copy, in your account, is not affected by any of this and stays as long as your plan allows.
Yes. You can delete a single recording from its interview page, and you can delete your entire account from your account settings, which removes your interviews, transcripts, notes and audio from our database and our file storage. It is a real deletion, not a hidden flag on a row we keep. Export everything first if you want to, so that deleting does not mean losing it.
Not as part of how the app works. Your recordings are not reviewed, rated, sampled, or listened to by us in normal use. Like any software company, we can reach data in our database when we are fixing a technical problem you have reported, and we keep that to whatever the problem actually requires.
Three things, plainly. Nothing you record is ever used to train AI. The recording belongs to you, and you can export all of it or delete all of it whenever you like. And to produce a written transcript, a copy of the audio leaves Canada and is processed in the United States before being deleted within 30 days. For some communities and some material, that last point matters a great deal, and we would rather you weigh it now than discover it later. If your community or organization has data sovereignty requirements we would need to meet, tell us. We are working on that, and it helps to hear what is actually needed.
Absolutely. There are no contracts or cancellation fees. You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings, and you'll keep access through the end of your billing period.
